[ Etymology
Old English heorte < Proto-Germanic *xirtan < Proto-Indo-European *ḱḗr. Cognate with Dutch hart, German Herz, Swedish hjärta. The Indo-European root is also the source of Greek καρδία, Latin cor, Welsh craidd, Russian сердце, Lithuanian širdis.
