Old English æfter, from Proto-Germanic *aftar- (“‘more behind’”), from Proto-Indo-European *aptar- (“‘more behind’”), comparative form of *apo- (“‘off, behind’”). The PIE comparative is also the source of Ancient Greek ἀπωτέρω (apōtérō).
