Latin Maria, from Ancient Greek Μαρία (Maria), Μαριάμ (Mariam), possibly from Aramaic מרים (Maryām), bitter, from a root מר (MR) meaning "to be bitter". The name corresponds to the Hebrew מרים (Miryām), Old Testament Miriam. The meaning is much debated.
